About The Job

Innovation Lab Engineer

Intern | Co-op | New Graduate

Toronto

You build things nobody asked you to build.

Discord bots. Automation scripts. Weird AI experiments. Game mods. Hardware hacks. Random tools that started as a "what if and turned into something that actually works.

If that sounds like you, keep reading.

Our client is looking for builders and tinkerers to join their Innovation Lab a small internal R&D team inside a growing consulting and technology firm with offices in Toronto and India. Your job: explore new technologies, build proof-of-concepts, and help figure out what’s real and what’s hype. Some of what you build will stay experimental. Some of it will become real products. All of it will matter.

About the Company

Our client, the4D.ca is a Great Place to Work Certified consulting and technology firm headquartered in Toronto. They bring together strategy, design, engineering, and delivery excellence to help organizations modernize their technology and accelerate growth. With a unified delivery model spanning North America and India, they combine local insight with global expertise to deliver solutions that create lasting value.

Their culture is grounded in professionalism, integrity, and a genuine commitment to their people. This is a company where teams collaborate openly, take ownership, and approach every challenge with discipline and curiosity. When they say their people are their priority, they mean it.

What You’ll Do

Explore

Research emerging tools, frameworks, and platforms. Run controlled experiments. Separate what’s genuinely useful from what’s just noise. Document what you find so the team can learn from it.

Build

Turn rough ideas into working prototypes. Write quick demos, scripts, integrations, and automation tools. Iterate fast. Break things, fix things, figure out how systems behave. That cycle is the entire job.

Ship (Sometimes)

When a prototype shows real promise, help take it further. Contribute to internal tools as they mature beyond the proof-of-concept stage. Integrate new systems with existing APIs and platforms.

Share

Write clear technical summaries. Contribute to demo materials and internal dossiers. Communication is as important as code in this role you need to explain what you built and why it matters.

What We’re Looking For

You don’t need to know everything. But you need to be someone who can’t stop tinkering.

YOU MUST HAVE

Curiosity that drives you to explore new tech on your own time

A track record of building side projects or experiments

Proficiency in TypeScript or Python

Working knowledge of Git / GitHub

Ability to learn independently and self-direct

Excellent communication skills

NICE TO HAVE

AI / LLM API experience

Automation or scripting tools

Basic web development

Docker or containers

Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP)

API integrations or dev tooling

Why This Role

  • You get to experiment for a living. The Innovation Lab exists specifically to explore what’s next.

  • Small team, real impact. What you build doesn’t disappear into a backlog. It gets tested, iterated, and sometimes shipped.

  • A global firm with a startup feel. The company has offices across North America and India, but the Innovation Lab team is tight-knit, collaborative, and moves fast.

  • Great Place to Work Certified. A company that invests in its people, not just its products.
